GIFT/GAME COMPOSITIONS
“Too Much Sausage, Not Enough Espresso” is a playful composition that is both gift and game and utilizes as much remembered and/or imagined sound as it does sound that can be heard by the human ear. “Too Much Sausage, Not Enough Espresso” is composed of a re-worked Twister mat and spinner, a needle, and a bouquet of balloons filled with the “pages” of the score. The performer must spin the spinner and pop a balloon that corresponds to the color the spinner lands on. The performer must extract that balloon’s contribution to the score and place it on a corresponding circle on the mat. Once all circles on the mat are full, the performer “reads” the score: this involves creating the sounds that would be made by small plastic farm animals if they were really alive, reading excerpts of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, remembering “You Are My Sunshine”, imagining a Grand Slam, bellowing a manifesto and telling a secret. A light-hearted combination of chance and contrivance, “Too Much Sausage, Not Enough Espresso” ends when the performer pops the white balloon and sets free all the doves.
